Sticky Buns!

My absolute favorite meal is breakfast, there are just so many options! I’m not the only one, because over 50% of Americans say that breakfast is their favorite meal of the day. There is even a song about breakfast!

Waffles, sausage, bacon, eggs, pancakes, toast, oatmeal, the list goes on and on! But the best one of all, the breakfast-food-to-top-all-breakfast-foods is sticky buns.

Sticky buns are a traditional food in my family. Not just for any occasion, sticky buns and all their sticky goodness are only brought out on Christmas, Easter, and the occasional breakfast when the whole family is at home.

Mom always starts by making the dough the night before, and putting it in the refrigerator to rise overnight. In the morning, she gets up early to shape the dough and fill the dough with butter and cinnamon. I remember waking up on Christmas morning to the sweet smell of yeasty dough rising, and I was almost as excited for sticky buns as I was for presents. Almost.

I would like to take a moment here to not that sticky buns are not to be confused with cinnamon rolls. Cinnamon rolls have a white sauce on top, made from confectioners sugar, milk and a bit of maple flavoring. Sticky buns have a caramel type of sauce, made from melted butter that has brown sugar slowly mixed in until it is a smooth, delicious topping. I always loved to help Mom mix the sauce and pour it over the steaming rolls. Especially if she let me lick the spatula when we were done!

It’s amazing how many of our memories are linked to food and the kitchen. Cooking and baking with Mom, sitting around the kitchen table as a family, the kitchen creates memories of family that will never be forgotten.
